[Standard disclaimer: The nature of abstracts are that they
are pieces of something larger. Not everyone is going to be happy with
my choice of abstracts from any larger work, so if you are
dissatisfied, I would refer you to the original document, which should
be able to be found on the Internet. I encourage others to make their
own abstracts to satisfy their needs. I would be happy to publish them
here.
Jay's Introduction
Here are some statistics for your consumption on the issue of
teen pregnancy. I include it here because it has a fine list of
INDICATORS that we might use in our Community Systems Change process.
Of course, our needs include having numbers on this for Quay County,
but we can get those, too.
I tire of the somewhat futile numbers that say that we are the
worst state for both Percent of total births to teens and Percent of
total births to mothers receiving late or no prenatal care. It is not a
terribly userful stat, except if you want to depress people that we
stink above and beyond other states. One trend that grabbed me was the
steady rise in the percentage of births to Hispanics compared with the
drop among whites. We are becoming a truly Hispanic state!
I produced this abstract using time paid for by the Quay
County Maternal Child and Community Health Council with funds from the
New Mexico Department of Health.
